Sturdy Construction
Luma After-Sunset
®
is a low-
voltage (12V) system that
includes high-quality, die-
cast aluminum or solid-brass
fixtures; substantial weather-
resistant, self-sealing, 10-
gauge, 3-wire cable; 300-
watt or 600-watt dual circuit
transformers that pack more
power than “off-the-shelf"
products. The Luma system
combines the best power-
handling capability with ease
of installation and operation.
Superior Performance
With the Luma dual-circuit
12-volt system using 10/3
cable, voltage drop is
reduced by as much as 75
percent over traditional 12-
volt systems using 12-gauge
wire. Luma cable is never
spliced, and the dual-circuit
design balances the total
wattage load.
Superior Finish
Luma ensures that the,
daytime appearance of your
landscape lighting will
remain as perfect as the
nighttime performance
because fixtures are
protected by the
exclusive
DeltaGuard
®
finish. This
E-coating and
ultra-durable topcoat
finishing process defeats
whatever nature throws at it,
and it’s guaranteed for seven
years.
Compact Fixtures
Because of the remote
transformer, individual Luma
fixtures are scaled correctly
for use around residences,
office entrances or atriums.
Whether a path or directional
light, Luma products nestle
into the landscape, so they
are discreet by day, dynamite
at night.
Complete Safety
UL Listed in the US, Luma
10/3 cable is UV-stabilized
and flame retardant. It can be
used above or below ground.
The specially formulated
insulation is self-sealing,
enabling connectors to be
removed and reinstalled
anywhere along the cable.
And there is no safety
concern, even if the cable is
inadvertently nicked by
garden tools.
Patented Connector
System
The design simplicity of the
Luma fixture pigtail
connector reduces time and
cost of installation by as
much as 90 percent over
competitive systems. The
nickel-plated beryllium
copper connector pins pierce
the insulation and make
contact with the wires deep
within the cable. This keeps
moisture from getting into
the contact area.
Energy Savings
The precise beam patterns of
low-voltage light sources
eliminate wasted spill light
and glare while saving
energy. For example, a 75-
watt narrow spot produces
the same center beam
candlepower as a standard
150-watt PAR38 spot
incandescent with less total
lumens and 50 percent less
energy. And our exclusive
12-volt compact fluorescent
fixtures provide excellent
energy savings for general
lighting needs.
Note: All Luma
®
low voltage
landscape fixtures are
designed for use with only
Luma transformers and
Luma cable. Installation of
Luma fixtures with non Luma
components, or any physical
modification of Luma
products, may lead to fixture
malfunction or failure and
will void all warranty or
obligation from Ruud
Lighting, Inc.

Luma After-Sunset
®
Planning
In commercial applications, the Luma low voltage (12V) landscape lighting system is
perfect for creating visual impact in a subtle yet effective way. Luma low voltage track
lights illuminate the corporate logo behind the reception desk. An atrium comes to life
when directional fixtures uplight trees. And outside when the sun sets, micro floods
provide effective sign lighting; bollards illuminate the entryway and the building’s
texture is emphasized by the grazing light of directional fixtures.
By daylight or moonlight, Luma After-Sunset landscape lighting is a beautiful addition
to any residence. Pathlight fixtures with graceful daytime appearance line the entryway
and assure safer passage by night. Directional fixtures provide dramatic shadow
lighting in front and backyards. And the safety of Luma low voltage track lighting
is ideal around swimming pools or spas.
Planning for the
Luma Low-Voltage (12V)
Landscape Lighting System
The paradox of landscape lighting is
that “less is more." By strategically
locating fixtures around a structure,
pools of light contrast with dark areas.
It is this interplay of light and shadow
that creates stunning visual impact.
Unlike 120-volt systems that require
buried cable, low-voltage lighting is
easily installed, making it ideal for
enhancing existing properties. The
design of each installation is tailored to
the unique characteristics
of the property’s foliage, structures and
human activities. With an understanding
of the variety of lighting effects in mind,
these questions come into play:
1. What sections and/or objects are to
be illuminated.
2. What combination of lamps and
fixtures will produce the desired
effect.
3. How much transformer power does
this lighting equipment require.
Sketch the Property
Begin by walking the property with an
objective eye. The front sidewalk or
driveway is a natural starting point.
Sketch the structure (house or office
building) in context on the lot, and make
note of trees for uplighting, interesting
textures, signs or address markers, and
colorful flowerbeds and shrubbery.
Lighting invites people into a space by
making it reassuring and enticing. Both
interior and exterior spaces benefit from
the sparkle of low-voltage lighting with
its superior color-rendering capabilities.
Rank Lighting Possibilities
Make a list of all the areas and items
that are candidates for lighting, then
rank them in order of importance. Again,
remember to plan conservatively. Low-
voltage lamps are on average three
times brighter per watt than line-voltage
lamps. Try to visualize driving up to the
house or business first from one
direction, then from the other. It is
usually more attractive when the lighting
effects are spread throughout the setting
rather than merely aimed for
symmetrical distribution.
Create a Plan
Drawing up a plan is critical, as it will
be referred to many times. Important
points to include in the layout: house
outline, walks, patios, decks and pools
or other water features. Mark in all the
areas previously identified for lighting.
It is imperative to show the number and
accessibility of GFI outlets.
Indicate Fixture Locations
Once the plan is complete, pencil in the
placement of path and directional
fixtures. Path lights are used for
walkways, flowerbeds and ground-cover
areas, with spacing of 6 to 10 feet
(1.8–3.0 m). With a narrow sidewalk,
stagger the lighting from one side to the
other; however, a uniform row of fixtures
works very well for a wide walkway or
driveway.
Well lights are extremely effective for
aiming light up a tree or column;
they should be located 2 to 4 feet
(0.6–1.2 m) out from the trunk. As the
name implies, directional lights aim a
beam directly at an object or surface.
These fixtures can be hidden under
shrubs or in other unobtrusive ways.
While path lights are supplied with an
18-watt lamp, directional fixtures offer a
range of lamp choices and beam
spreads.
Refer to the lamps on page 287 to aid
with your decision-making. When the
lamp wattage is known, the transformer
calculation is easy (see page 186). Just
add up the total wattage of lamps you
are using and make sure it is less than
or equal to the transformer. If it exceeds
the amount, more than one transformer
may be needed. Try to leave extra space
on the transformer for future expansion.
Commercial Installation
Considerations
Commercial installations require more
concentrated lighting layouts. There
may be competition from ambient light
in a shopping district or strip center; the
HID lights in the parking lot may wash
out lower wattage effects. Luma is the
right choice because of the long-term
durability of metal components, the
12-volt safety factor, and the no-splice
connector design that minimizes
voltage drop.
Luma Track delivers the powerful punch
of MR16 and MR11 in petite fixtures
with some that are UL Listed for wet
locations. Both retail and restaurant
owners will find this track system
extremely flexible.

Determining Cable Length for Ordering
1. Figure the total wattage (both circuits combined) of the fixtures to be used on the
system.
2. Locate this number along the “Wattage Total" at the bottom of the Recommended
Cable Length chart.
3. Follow the line up until you reach the RED “10/3 Luma Cable" line.
4. Read across the chart to “Distance in Feet." This is the maximum recommended
length of cable for your system.
Example A-Single Feed: One cable exiting transformer. One 300-watt transformer with
a 220-watt total load (110W per circuit). Recommended maximum cable length is 215
feet (66 m).
Example B-Dual Feed: Two separate cables exiting the transformer (possibly one to the
front yard, one to the back yard). Cables may be of unequal length. One 600-watt
transformer with Cable B1 maintaining a 30-watt total load (150 watts per circuit), and
Cable B2 maintaining a 200-watt total load (100 watts per circuit). Recommended
maximum B1 Cable length is 150 feet (45.8 m). Recommended maximum B2 Cable
length is 225 feet (69 m).
Example C-Loop Feed: One continuous cable coming back around to the transformer.
One 300-watt transformer with 150-watt total load (75 watts per circuit).
Recommended maximum cable length is 650 feet (198 m).
Cable Construction
Luma heavy-duty #10 gauge
3-wire cable allows longer runs and
greatly reduces voltage-drop problems
found in typical #16 to #12 gauge
2-wire systems. Luma 10/3 cable, UV-
stabilized and flame retardant, can be
installed above ground or buried. The
specially formulated insulation in Luma
cable is self-sealing, which enables
connectors to be removed and
reinstalled anywhere along the cable.
Benefits of Luma Cable
Getting rid of voltage drop means you
can use more lamps and go for longer
distance runs —getting the light to
where it’s needed. The voltage chart
demonstrates the dramatic advantage of
10/3 using Luma Cable over 12/2
systems. Solving the voltage-drop
problem offers you a lot more flexibility
in laying out a system while reducing
the number of transformers needed.
Luma cable’s self-sealing design offers
reliable connection and relocation of
fixtures over the life of the installation.
Patented Pigtail Connector
All Luma fixtures (except track fixtures)
have a patented 5-foot (1.5 m) pigtail
connector that allows for quick and easy
connection to the cable. This unique
design allows the nickel-plated
beryllium copper connector pins to
pierce the cable and make electrical
contact inside the insulation. No
moisture ever intrudes into the contact
area. One of the main advantages of the
Luma low-voltage (12V) system is that
you don’t cut and splice the main cable,
eliminating voltage drop and conductor
corrosion.

Ruud Lighting’s Retractable
Bollard (DR Series) brings
nighttime landscapes alive
without taking away their
daytime beauty. The fixture

The Retractable Bollard rises
13.1 inches (333 mm) above
grade when in use and has only
a 5-inch (127 mm) diameter at
grade level. A rigid PVC shell
firmly supports the fixture and
the operating components
below grade. All luminaires
take advantage of low-voltage
lamp sources to provide safe,
energy-efficient lighting with
brilliant accent or directional
illumination.
Low and Line Voltage
All low-voltage units have a
patented pigtail connector,
which quickly attaches to our
Luma (10/3) cable and our
Luma remote transformer
(available in 300-watt and

The Up/Down Movement
A unique rack-gear system
extends and retracts the
bollard. Applying power
energizes the system. First, the
inner fixture rises from its shell
