Built-in thermal protectors

In compliance with the latest

UL standards and the National

Electrical Code, all Ruud

®

housings (except fluorescents)

have a thermal protector that

will turn off the fixture under

conditions that cause

overheating. After the fixture

cools down, the thermal

protector resets itself and will

deactivate the unit again if the

temperature level is exceeded.

Avoid overheating

problems

Do not overlamp. All recessed

manufacturers’ trims carry a UL

label indicating the type and

maximum wattage lamp that

can be used in a trim. Please

follow these recommendations

carefully.

Air tight recessed cans

Recessed downlights can

create open airways between

temperature-controlled rooms

and their uncontrolled attic or

plenum spaces. Our Insulated

Ceiling Air Tight Recessed

Downlights (ICAT Series)

minimize air infiltration and

leakage. This is especially

important in states where codes

require airtight recessed

fixtures. Our ICAT Series is

offered in three popular

models, 4-inch Incandescent

(R4ICAT), 6-inch Incandescent

(R7ICAT) and 6-inch

Fluorescent with 18-watt lamp

(R7FICAT18).

For other projects where direct

contact with insulated ceiling

materials may occur, use the

4-inch Low Voltage

Incandescent (R4LICAT),

6-inch Economy Incandescent

(R7EIC) or 6-inch Incandescent

for remodel projects (R7RIC). If

you choose to use another

housing, be sure the insulation

is at least 3 inches away from

housing and junction box.

Lamp bonus

As a service to our customers,

all Ruud fluorescent and HID

housings are shipped with

the appropriate lamp. This

saves you from having to order

your lamps and allows

simultaneous delivery of both

the housing and lamp. Most

important, this makes Ruud

Recessed Lighting even more

economical.

Lamp listings

Please follow the lamp listings

under each trim very carefully.

There are two common types

of incandescent trims: A lamp

trims and BR or PAR lamp

trims. You should use only

the lamp specified. The wattage

listed is the maximum

allowable for each specific trim.

You may use a lower-wattage

lamp, but not one with a higher

wattage.

Smaller aperture,

greater flexibility

In planning a downlighting installation,

scale is an important consideration. A

6-inch or 7-inch aperture may be too

large for task lighting in the kitchen or

highlighting of artwork. That’s where

Ruud’s 4-inch mini-recessed housing

and trims are perfect.

For non-insulated ceilings, or where

insulation is at least 3 inches away,

these two housings are the right choice.

New construction and remodel versions

are available, offering a choice of line or

low voltage. Aiming angle is adjustable

up to 30 degrees in low-voltage fixtures.

Each housing type is compact,

occupying almost half the space of

standard recessed units. A black

polyester powder finish protects the

steel housing while enhancing the final

appearance of the fixture installed.

Incandescent light sources provide

unmatched color rendering properties

and control. Plus, whether it’s an A, a

BR, a PAR or an ER, an incandescent

lamp is easy to install, and available in

many wattages.

Halogen lamps are an

economical alternative

If your customers like incandescent

lighting but are concerned about energy

costs, consider halogen PAR lamps, as

well as the TB19, the halogen lamp that

can be substituted for the A19. Tungsten

halogen lamps produce a “whiter" light

that enhances merchandise and decor

with greater energy efficiency. All lamps

for this housing are sold separately;

downlights offer

you long life at low prices.

In areas where insulation is not present,

choose the R7 (page 267). It also can be

used with insulation, if the insulation is

not above the housing and is kept 3

inches away.

The R7ICAT is airtight

Recessed downlights can create open

airways between temperature-controlled

rooms and their uncontrolled attic or

plenum spaces. Our new Insulated

Ceiling Air Tight Recessed Downlight

(R7ICAT) minimizes air infiltration and

leakage. This is especially useful in

states with codes requiring airtight

recessed fixtures.

Features

Double housing

Square galvanized housing surrounds a

round galvanized housing, providing an

excellent thermal barrier.

Adjustable housing

Adjusts up to 1-3/8 inches in plaster

frame to accommodate different ceiling

thicknesses.

NOTE: Socket is not adjustable.

Corrosion-resistant

Can, plaster frame and junction box are

constructed of zinc-plated steel.

7-1/2 inch height

Allows installation in 2 x 8 wood joist

construction.

Oversized junction box

Designed for easy through-branch

circuit wiring. Box cover has a snap

latch for quick installation. Eight

No.12 (90°C) branch-circuit conductors

permitted in junction box.

Rigid bar hangers

These rigid bar hangers are for

use in 16 inch to 24 inch O.C. wood

joist or T-Bar construction. This design

permits sturdier installations that are

less prone to sagging. Because the

recessed fixture can now slide anywhere

along the bar hanger, they are handy in

T-Bar ceilings where centering of the

fixture within the ceiling panel is

desired. One-piece 27- inch bar hangers

(RBH27) are available where required by

code for suspended ceiling or off-center

positioning installations.

Thermal protector

Protects fixture from overheating if

incorrect lamp is used.

Dimmers

Standard specification grade

incandescent dimmers can be used.

Labels

Housing is UL Listed in the US and

Canada for damp locations, direct burial

in insulation and feed-through wiring.

When used with RT113 trim, luminare is

listed for damp location use.
